The Winter Solstice marks the moment that the sun turns back toward the Earth! The Sun reaches its southernmost position and begins to move northward as it enters into the cardinal, earth sign Capricorn. Through the ages, the period when the Sun moves northward again — from the Winter Solstice to the Summer Solstice — has been regarded as a festival season.

In many lands and civilizations the Winter Solstice season has been associated with the coming of a Sun-God to save the world — bringing light and fruitfulness to the Earth, and bringing hope to humanity.It offers the promise of spring blossoms, fragrance, and fruit --- within and without -- as the light of the sun awakens the sleeping bulbs and trees. At the time of the Winter Solstice, something within us stirs and responds to the shift in the planetary alignment. If we allow an inner stillness and poise to develop, we can stand as if from the peak of the mountain and see our lives in the valley below. From this vantage point we can see the whole picture of life -- the past, the present and the future meet as one. We see the vision that lies ahead and make the choice to take advantage of all opportunities to contribute our part in the plan for humanity's future.

The innate creative urge of humanity grows more intense each month after the Solstice until the first jonquils shoot skyward in the warm sun and the buds burst open. Our flowering can match their brilliant color and beauty with the voice and written words, with song, and externalizing the hearts love for all the people.

Silence, solitude, and spiritual vision are the gifts of the Solstice.

You might enjoy planning a ceremony for the Winter Solstice, either for yourself alone, or with others. Select symbols to represent the soul -- the light within -- that illuminates the darkness. White candles are lovely at this time. The idea is to acknowledge and honor the life within, the love within, and the light within.

Our groups will be sitting in a circle with candles in the center. We imagine forming a clear channel for the energy moving between and around with each shift of focus from light to love to purpose for humanity. The Solstice energies stream through this channel and in this balanced position between the two great lines of force, an expanded vision can appear.You are invited to participate and align with the planetary meditation by the Hierarchy in preparation for the outpouring of spiritual energies during Wesak, the Spiritual Festival of May. To participate in this planetary Winter Solstice meditation:

Create a sacred space, still the mind and maintain inner peace. See yourself as part of the united group channel through which the spiritual forces can become available. Affirm this channel, "We stand poised, united as one soul with our Spiritual Hierarchy." Hold the focus. Be meditatively receptive. Open to impression for the new spiritual cycle. Hold this space for as long as you are inspired.
